Just jumping straight to pick one the telecom service providers and their modems as the best internet provider or best modem to buy in Nigeria would be tantamount to misleading people unnecessarily. With that said, I want to quickly point out that all the modems and service providers have their issues and problems. None of them is totally perfect and 100% efficient. Nevertheless, some of them are still very good and can still be used without much stress.
To decide or discuss the best Nigerian modem or internet service provider you should buy, you have to consider the following.
1. Your Location
Some modems work better in some locations than some. Generally, places like Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and other highly populated areas are treated better than other smaller areas cities and towns. These places have better network and may rarely have network issues and downtimes.
2. Cost /Plans
All the different modems and telecommunication companies have their different payment plans. Some are rigid than others .some are customer friendly, some are not. Some have many options, some don’t. One has to consider all these when picking the best modem or internet service provider to use in Nigeria.
3. Time Of Use
Now depending on the time you intend to use any of the modems (day, night, part day, part night). Different modems have their different time of usage plans. Some are flexible and user friendly some are not. Some are hourly. Some are monthly; some are bulk time etc. one has to consider this as well before making a choice.
4. 3G
Some of these internet service providers have 3G services, some don’t. Some have it in some towns, some don’t. In other to be objective, one needs to consider this when making an appraisal of the available internet modems and their providers in Nigeria.
Before I start, I will reveal that I have not used all the modems available (I have used MTN, Starcomms, Zoom, visaphone, Airtel)
My Recommendations
To make this easy, I will discuss the service providers, their modems and their high and low points while comparing them to each other.
You are free to make your own conclusions and choice from the comparisons done.
1. Location
In terms of location many if not all the available internet providers have a stable and good network in places like Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt. So if you are buying any of the modems in any of these places, you can be rest assured that you will not have many issues but if you will leave town or is not located in any these places, you to look more closely. Let’s look at other criteria’s.
2. Cost and Data bundle
In terms of cost and data bundle, MTN gives 3Gig data for all it plans except the daily plan. The night plan for MTN start from 9p.m. and ends at 6.a.m.this plan is good for people who are usually busy during the day and only want to use the internet at night or very early in the morning. This night plan cost only N2500 (as at the time of this writing) and is one of the cheapest considering the amount of data use can use. (this may change as competitions sets in )
MTN’s issue is the lack of many choices for their users. You either use the daily, nightly or 24 hour plan.
(Don’t just rush and pick this one, check the other alternatives in the market.)

Go to this links and compare prices etc. (Due to competition, prices change and upgrade of the different networks do occur, so check their websites to find out what the current situation is before making a pick)
3. Zoom
4. Airtel
5. Etisalat
6. Visaphone
and others
Look at their plans and cost of modems and other alternative to decide what works for you. To know the best one for your location, you may have to ask people in your locality what works for them.
Hopefully, a time will come when internet modems and access in Nigeria will be too cheap to even worry about all this.
Hope this is helpful.
If you have a modem already, what is it and how is it working for you.
Thank you.
